We invite you to take part in Tromsø Mountain Challenge, one weekend with four races in three days. The mountains of Northern Norway offer some great contrasts: “Loafer”-terrain, mountains and fjords, steep hills and scree slopes, lush green mountain terraing and a view that offers new strength! Take part in the Triple or choose a single race. We have something for all Levels and ambitions!  Are you up for the challenge?

MSM Extreme race

On Friday 21st August 2020

you can take part in MSM Extreme race – an uphill race that starts from Tromsø Camping in the valley Tromsdalen, and leads you straight up the steep trail to the cable car station “Fjellstua”. For the first time, participants get the chance to run up the entire popular “Sherpatrappa”, which will be completed in 2019. The staircase will then have over 1000 steps and is one of the longest stairs in Norway built by the Sherpians from Nepal.  The total track measures 2.4km with 420m increase.  Short, but tough! We can promise you burning and shaky legs at the finish line.

we offer a terrain race in beautiful and varied mountain terrain- here you will find heather moores, marshes, river crossings, rugged hills and stunning views! The Tromsø Mountain Ultra measures 50km and leads you from the start at Snarbyeidet to the finish line in Tromsdalen valley. Remeber to save som strength before climbing the hills towards the top of Bønntuva! This race was the first ultra race that was arranged in Northern Norway.

In addition to 50km we also offer a shorter alternative, HalfUltra 25km which starts and ends at Tromsø Camping in Tromsdalen Valley. Are you ready to put yourself to the test?

NB! At the Ultra 50km and HalfUltra 25km it is mandatory to bring with you a backpack/running vest With predetermined content. See more info on this at the FAQ-section on this page.


Tindløpet (1238m up)

The race weekend ends with an uphill race to the city summit and landmark- Mount Tromsdalstinden, 1238masl. You can see the majestic mountain from Tromsø city center on a clear day, and “Tinden” is a wellknown landmark and popular hiking destination in the city. The trail starts at Tromsø Camping in Tromsdalen valley, and measures 10,6 km to the top of the mountain.

All participants need a backpack containing something to drink, food, dry shirt and a wind jacket. There is no service station at the top. The content of the backpack is meant as safety equipment, as the weather conditions can be quite rough at the top of Tromsdalstinden.

Before the race

What gear is required for participating in Tindløpet (Tromsdalstinden Up)?

All participants are required to bring a backpack that contains a dry shirt, food, waterbottle/something to drink, food and a wind jacket. There are no service stations at the top of Tromsdalstinden. The content of the backpack is considered safety gear, as there might be some rough weather conditions at the top of the mountain.

How long is the registration open for Tromsø Mountain Challenge?

Extrem race, HalfUltra and Tromsdalstinden 1238m up: Online registration open until thursday before the race, 12:00, as long as we still have available starting numbers.

Tromsø Mountain Ultra 50km and the Triple: Online registration is open until monday before the race, 12:00, as long as we still have available starting numbers.


What are the age categories at Tromsø Mountain Challenge?

At MSM Extreme race there are 8 categories- 4 for women and 4 for men.  12-14 years, 15-17 years, 18-49 years, 50+. We calculate your age category after birth year, not date. That means that if you will become 12 years in the year of the race, you are old enough to participate.

Tromsø Mountain Ultra 50km and HalfUltra have two categories – women, and men.  Lower age limit is 18 years for HalfUltra 25km and TMU50km.

For Tromsdalstinden 1238m up have two categories – women, and men.  Lower age limit is 15 years

When and where can I collect the bib for Tromsø Mountain Challenge?

For Tromsø Mountain Challenge:

Extreme race/ TMUltra50km: Bib pickup Friday 12:00-16:30 at the servicecenter at Tromsø Camping in Tromsdalen.

HalfUltra 25km: Friday August 23rd from 12:00-16:30 and saturday August 24th from 09:00-11:30 at Tromsø Camping in Tromsdalen.

Tromsdalstinden 1238m up: Sunday August 25th from 09:00-11:30 at Tromsø Camping in Tromsdalen.

What is the age limit for Tromsø Mountain Challenge?

We calculate your age and category by birth year, not birth date. This means that as long as you will be 18 in the year of the race, you can participate in the HalfUltra and the Ultra.

I cannot participate myself, can I sell my startnumber to someone else?

No, the registration is personal and binding. By registering for the race you accept our terms & conditions, and we do not refund nor change names on fulfilled registrations. Runners who participate with someone else’s startnumber will be disqualified.

If you cannot participate due to injury/illness you can send us an email ( within a week after race day, together with a medical certificate from your doctor/physician stating that you are unable to attend. Then we will move your registration to next years’ race (NB! We charge a fee of 100,- NOK to move your registration, which also has to be paid within a week after race day).

What do I have to do at the service stations/checkpoints?

Applicable to all runners at TMU50km and HalfUltra 25km:

All runners are required to pass through the service stations/checkpoints during the race, so we can be sure you have run the whole race. The race Marshalls (or clocks) at each checkpoint will register at what time you passed through the station.  Below you can see a list of all service stations/checkpoints you will have to pass through:

  • Blåkollkoia cabin (19km)
  • Dreperen (ca 23km)
  • Skarvassbu cabin (25km)

  • Fjellheisen (ca 40km) – Also HalfUltra
  • Svarthammaren (ca 45km) – Also HalfUltra

All runners have to pass through the check points so the race marshalls can register that they have been there.

What is the cut-off time for Tromsø Mountain Challenge?

Tromsø Mountain Challenge:

TMU50km: Max time limit by checkpoint Tromsdalselva (32km) is 5 1/2h (14:30). If you use longer time you will have to finish your race here, and continue directly to the finish area by Tromsø Camping in Tromsdalen valley and report to a race marshall.  The total maximum time for the Tromsø Mountain Ultra is 9h.

HalfUltra 25km: 6h

Tromsdalstinden 1238m up: 3h

Are there drinking stations at Tromsø Mountain Challenge?

MSM Extreme race:

Drinking station at the finish area.

TMU50km and HalfUltra 25km:

There will be service stations at all the cabins, Tromsdalselva river and  by the cable car station Fjellheisen, serving water and Maxim sportsdrink. Ved Tromsdalselva river and Fjellheisen you will also find bananas and coca cola. Please finish your drink at the service station or bring your cup to the next, do not spread litter in the nature. You can refill  your water bottle at the service station or in one of the many rivers you cross along the trail (mainly TMUltra). Remember that you have to bring the rest of the food and drinks yourself.


There is a drinking station by Tromsdalselva river and at Salen (before the steepest part of the ridge). Please note that we require all participants to bring a full waterbottle in their backpack to the finish, as there are no service stations there.

How do I get to the start at TMUltra and HalfUltra?

Tromsø Mountain Ultra 50km: We set up a bus from Tromsø camping, which leaves at 07:50 in the morning for Snarbyeidet (start point). You can leave your luggage at Tromsø camping (at your own responsibility) or even take it with you to the start. Luggage left at the buss will be transported back to the finish area. Please note that we take no responsibility for your belongings/luggage.

HalfUltra 25km: The start is at Tromsø Camping in Tromsdalen valley. If you come by bus from the city center, take bus nr 24 Kroken or 20 Kroken and go off at the stop “Båthavna” (boat harbour). Follow the road along the river and up to the Camping, it takes approximately 10min to walk.


Are there any service stations during the race?

Polar Night Halfmarathon

There will be drinking stations every 5 km. Water and Maxim Sportdrink will be served at all the service stations. Toilets are only available at the starting- and finish area.


Midnight Sun Marathon

Water and Maxim Sport drinks at every 5 kilometres.  The last stations for marathon and half marathon will also offer gel and bananas. Toilets are available at the 5, 15, 25, and 35 km points in the race.


Tromsø Mountain Challenge

TMU50km and HalfUltra 25km:
There are service stations by all the cabins along the trail, by the river Tromsdalselva and at Fjellheisen (cable car station). They serve water and Maxim sports drink. At Tromsdalselva and Fjellheisen they also have Coca Cola and bananas. Please leave your cup at the drinking station or bring it to the next servicepoint. Garbage must only be thrown in garbage bags at the service stations and NOT along the trail. There are many rivers along the trail where you can refill your water bottle. Apart from that you will have to bring your own food and drinks.

Tromsdalstinden 1238m opp:
There is a drinking station by Tromsdalselva (the river) and at the top of Salen, before you start on the last ridge towards the summit.  We require all runners to bring with them a bottle of water (minimum 0,5l) that has to be full when they cross the finish line. This is because there is no service station at the finish.

Required content of race backpack

During TMU50km and the HalfUltra 25km the runners are required to bring a backpack. As the required content is considered an emergency kit, all items in the backpack must be inside the backpack (not worn) when you cross the finish line.

  • Map (provided by the organizer)
  • Compass or GPS (GPS watch and compass in watch is approved)
  • Food (minimum 150g food left in your backpack when you cross the finish line)
  • Windbreaker jacket
  • Windbreaker pants
  • Hat
  • Gloves
  • Whistle (to call for attention if you are in need of help)
  • Cellphone
  • Water bottle (or skin)
  • Warming blanket/foil (provided by organizer)
Please note:

The equipment of the backpack is considered emergency gear, as the weather and conditions can get challenging up in the mountains during the race. All runners participate at their own risk, and must ensure they have enough food, Liquids and dry clothes to take care of themselves in a possible emergency. This is why the items in the content list above have to be inside the backpack when you finish the race.  We also remind you that you are required to help other runners in need during the race.

TMU50km: Organizers give all participants a tshirt, warming blanket/foil, and a map of the race course. The rest of the required content the participants have to bring themselves. The backpack can be checked by race marshalls when you cross the finish line. There is 15min addition time per item that is missing from the list of required content.

HalfUltra 25km:Participants in the HalfUltra 25km trail must have the same content in the backpack as the TMU50km, but will only receive the warming blanket/foil and map from the organizers. The participants themselves are responsible for bringing the required content in their backpack.

The participants cannot receive any other support during the race than from the service stations along the trail. Apart from this you can only use what you bring in Your backpack. It is not allowed to have accompanying runners from outside the race.

Do you publish any photos from Tromsø Mountain Challenge?

If we (as organizers) have time, we try to take some photos from the start- and finish-area at the different races. These will be published on our Facebook-page. Follow us there for updates! Do I get a medal for my race at Tromsø Mountain Challenge?

MSM Extreme race:

All the participants who finishes the race will receive a medal. We also award the following:  top three en each age category (men and women) and the sprint prize for men and women. We also draw some prizes by starting number. New course record for men and women is awarded with NOK 1000,- each.

TMU 50km/ HalfUltra 25km:

We award all finishers. In addition to this we also award the top three best men and women in TMU 50km and HalfUltra 25km.

Tromsdalstinden 1238m up:

All participant that finish the race will be given a T-shirt for participation. In addition to this we also award the top three best men and women.


The top three best men and women who finishes the full Triple will be awarded.  All Triple-finishers receive a diploma.

About Tromsø

Where should I stay during my visit in Tromsø?

Visit Tromsø lists most of the  hotels, Apartments, camping sites and other accomodation info HERE. Please note that even though almost all the hotels are located in the city centre, you should always check the location before booking. The hotels in the city centre are all within walking distance from the start- and finish-area of Midnight Sun Marathon, Polar Night Halfmarathon and the reindeer racing and lassothrowing during Samí Week.

How can I travel to Tromsø?

If you are travelling from outside Norway to Tromsø, you have to fly to Oslo and take a connecting flight to Tromsø. The flight time from Tromsø to Oslo is approximately 2 hours and there are several daily flights.

If you wish to travel by sea, the Coastal steamer Hurtigruten arrives in Tromsø daily, and travelling within the region you can board the express boats from Harstad and Finnsnes.
