Midnight Sun Marathon

Saturday, June 22nd, 2019, we organize the 30th edition of Midnight Sun Marathon(MSM).  Runners from all over the world are coming to Tromsø to run in the Arctic and the land of the Midnight sun. Our courses are controlled and certified by Hugh Jones in AIMS “Association of International Marathon and Distance Races”. Approximately 6000 runners take on the streets of Tromsø every year. No matter level and age, there is a distace for you during MSM. You can choose between: Marathon, Mizuno Half Marathon, TINE Mila (10k), Coop Mini Marathon (4,2k) and Kids marathon (800m).

In 2019 we celebrate our 30th anniversary, and we hope you join us for the celebration!

Before the race

What are the different age categories for MSM?

AGE GROUPS
Marathon: men and women- age 18-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75 and above.
Mizuno Half-marathon: men and women- age 16-17, 18-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75 and above.
TINE Mila 10km Race: men and women- age 12-14, 15-17, 18-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75 and above.
Coop Mini-Marathon: 0-11 years – age 12-14, 15-17, 18 and above.
Kids Marathon: one class only. Age 0-11 years
NB! Please note that you are put in age category after birth year, not birth date. That means that if you will be 35 in the same year of the event, you will be put in age category 35-39.

Where do I pick up my bib for Midnight Sun Marathon?

During race weekend the race secretariat will be located at City Hall in Tromsø city center. Here you will pick up your bib (start number and info), receive info about the race, and you can visit our official MSM shop. Approximately two weeks before the race you will receive a receipt for your bib by email. NB! Please note that you will have to present ID and your confirmed bib receipt to collect your bib.

How old do I have to be to participate in Midnight Sun Marathon?

Midnight Sun Marathon:  Childrens race: 0-11år//4,2km- no age limit //10km- from 12 y.o//21,1km- from 16 y.o//42,2km- from 18 y.o.

Age and age category is determined by birth year, not birth date. This means that as long as you will be 18 in the year of the race, you can participate in the marathon distance, and so on.

I cannot participate myself, can I sell my startnumber to someone else?

No, the registration is personal and binding. By registering for the race you accept our terms & conditions, and we do not refund nor change names on fulfilled registrations. Runners who participate with someone else’s startnumber will be disqualified.

If you cannot participate due to injury/illness you can send us an email (info@msm.no) within a week after race day, together with a medical certificate from your doctor/physician stating that you are unable to attend. Then we will move your registration to next years’ race (NB! We charge a fee of 100,- NOK to move your registration).

How much is the entry fee for Midnight Sun Marathon?

The prices for our two biggest events depend on when you sign up, and which distance you are running. Sign up early to save money on the entry fee!

TMU50km, 5h 30min, to pass Check Point Tromsdalselva. Runners who arrive at this check point later will be taken out of the race (Max time 9h for the whole course).

On raceday

What if I have to drop out during the race or need medical aid?

Tromsø Red Cross have medical stations at every 5 kilometres. If you have to drop out of the race, please contact our race marshals and give them your start number. If needed we will provide medical attention and transportation to the finishing area.
Please do NOT start if you are injured or have had a virus or fever in the last four weeks. All runners are responsible for their own medical health and safety, and participate at their own risk.

Where are the drinking stations at Midnight Sun Marathon?

Water and Maxim Sport drinks at every 5 kilometres.  The last stations for marathon and half marathon will also offer  bananas. There ia also a drinking station at Stortorget at the finish.

Are there toilets available before and during Midnight Sun Marathon?

Toilets are available at every five km, close to the drinking stations. Toilets are also available at the start- and finish-area.

 

Where can I store my bag during Midnigth Sun Marathon?

Bag storage will be available for runners at Kulturhuset close to the start. Please use the tag attached to your start number to label your bag or personal items. The bag must be labeled before you hand it in. Please hand in youg bag early to avoid queuing before start. Bags/clothes are delivered at your own risk.

Is there any distance marking along the course?

Every kilometre will be marked for the marathon and half marathon courses. The first mark is 42 km, and indicates that there are 42 km left. The next mark is 41 km and counting down to the finish.

What is the maximum time limit for Midnight Sun Marathon?

Max time limit for the marathon distance is 5h and 30min. For the Mizuno Halfmarathon the time limit is 3h and 30min.

 

Are there any service stations during the race?

Polar Night Halfmarathon

There will be drinking stations every 5 km. Water and Maxim Sportdrink will be served at all the service stations. Toilets are only available at the starting- and finish area.

 

Midnight Sun Marathon

Water and Maxim Sport drinks at every 5 kilometres.  The last stations for marathon and half marathon will also offer gel and bananas. Toilets are available at the 5, 15, 25, and 35 km points in the race.

 

Tromsø Mountain Challenge

MSM Extremerace:
Drinking station when you arrive at the finish line at Fjellstasjonen.

TMU50km and HalfUltra 25km:
There are service stations by all the cabins along the trail, by the river Tromsdalselva and at Fjellheisen (cable car station). They serve water and Maxim sports drink. At Tromsdalselva and Fjellheisen they also have Coca Cola and bananas. Please leave your cup at the drinking station or bring it to the next servicepoint. Garbage must only be thrown in garbage bags at the service stations and NOT along the trail. There are many rivers along the trail where you can refill your water bottle. Apart from that you will have to bring your own food and drinks.

Tromsdalstinden 1238m opp:
There is a drinking station by Tromsdalselva (the river) and at the top of Salen, before you start on the last ridge towards the summit.  We require all runners to bring with them a bottle of water (minimum 0,5l) that has to be full when they cross the finish line. This is because there is no service station at the finish.

After the race

Where can I find pictures from Midnight Sun Marathon?

MarathonPhotos  is our official partner, and they take pictures of all finishing runners at the race. You can order pictures, video or diploma from the race directly from them.  Save a smile for the photographers at the finish line! We also receive other pictures from the race, and these photos will be published on our Facebook-page a few days after the race.

 

 

 

Awards and prize money for Midnight Sun Marathon

Everyone who finishes the race (all the distances) will receive a medal.
Prizes will be awarded to the 3 best participants in each class of the Marathon, Mizuno Halfmarathon and TINE Mila (10km) race.
Price money will be awarded to the top 3 male and female Marathon runners whose finishing times are under 2.55.00 (women) and 2.30.00 (men).

A bonus of NOK 5 000 will be given for new marathon course record.
The award ceremony for Marathon, Mizuno Half Marathon and the TINE Mila (10km) Race will be held Sunday June 17 at 13:00. Unclaimed prizes will not be forwarded.
For Coop Mini-Marathon prizes are drawn. The award ceremony is right after the race at the finish line.
For the Kids Marathon everyone will get a medal. Additionally, a prize for best costumes will be drawn. The awards will be directly after the race at the finish line.

Where can I find pictures of myself from the race?

Our partner Marathon Photos takes pictures of all runners when they cross the finish line. They offer packages with both photos and video from your race.

Apart from this, we will also publish some pictures at our Facebook-page a few days after the race. So if you are anxious to see if we got a photo of you, feel free to follow us there. Also the local newspapers iTromsø and Nordlys often have Pictures from the race both online and in the newspaper.

Will I receive a medal for my race?

Polar Night Halfmaraton

All finishers receive a medal at the finish line.

Prizes are awarded for the three fastest in each age category for Polar Night Halfmarathon.
For the10 km race the top three female and men runners will be awarded. For the 5km race there will be timing, but no results. All runners will get their time.

 

Midnight Sun Marathon

All finishers receive a medal at the finish line.

Prizes will be awarded to the 3 best participants in each class of the Marathon, Half marathon and MSM 10 km race.
Price money will be awarded to the top 3 male and female Marathon runners whose finishing times are under 2.55.00 (women) and 2.30.00 (men).

About Tromsø

Where should I stay during my visit in Tromsø?

Visit Tromsø lists most of the  hotels, Apartments, camping sites and other accomodation info HERE. Please note that even though almost all the hotels are located in the city centre, you should always check the location before booking. The hotels in the city centre are all within walking distance from the start- and finish-area of Midnight Sun Marathon, Polar Night Halfmarathon and the reindeer racing and lassothrowing during Samí Week.

How can I travel to Tromsø?

If you are travelling from outside Norway to Tromsø, you have to fly to Oslo and take a connecting flight to Tromsø. The flight time from Tromsø to Oslo is approximately 2 hours and there are several daily flights.

If you wish to travel by sea, the Coastal steamer Hurtigruten arrives in Tromsø daily, and travelling within the region you can board the express boats from Harstad and Finnsnes. There are also bus Connections from the surrounding cities, such as Narvik, Bardufoss and Alta. Se more info about travelling within Troms region at the regional traffic site, Tromskortet.

What should I do or see when visiting Tromsø?
