Midnight Sun Marathon

Running races in the middle of the midnight sun – a celebration of Arctic contrasts

There are more than 6000 participants from all over the world gathering in the streets of Tromsø to join the running races Midnight Sun Marathon has to offer.

There is five different distances to choose from: Marathon (42,2km), Mizuno Half Marathon (21,1km), Coop Mila (10km), MSM Mini-marathon (4,2km) and SNN Kids Race (800m). The races are open for all and day becomes a festival in town. Many locals gather along the streets of the course to cheer the runners on through the streets of Tromsø.The courses are controlled and certified by AIMS “Association of International Marathon and Distance Races”.

The Arctic capital Tromsø is located at 69 degrees north, about 350 km north of the arctic circle. Most of the city is situated on a small island surrounded by the sea and beautiful mountains. Northern Norway and the nature here is full of strong contrasts that provide intense running experiences for its visitors. During the summer the sun never sets below the horizon and running under the Midnight Sun is a true bucket list oppertunity.

Before the race

Cancellation of participation

Your registration is personal and binding. By registering for the race you accept our terms & conditions, and we do not refund nor change names on fulfilled registrations. Runners who participate with someone else’s startnumber will be disqualified.

If you cannot participate due to injury/illness you can send us an email (info@msm.no) within a week after race day, together with a medical certificate from your doctor/physician stating that you are unable to attend. Then we will move your registration to next years’ race (NB! We charge a fee of 100,- NOK to move your registration, which also has to be paid within a week after race day).

Age limits & groups

Midnight Sun Marathon:  Childrens race: 0-11år//4,2km- no age limit //10km- from 12 y.o//21,1km- from 15 y.o//42,2km- from 18 y.o.

Age and age category is determined by birth year, not birth date. This means that as long as you will be 18 in the year of the race, you can participate in the marathon distance, and so on.


Marathon: men and women- age 18-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75 and above.

Mizuno Half-marathon: men and women- age 15-17, 18-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75 and above.

Coop Mila 10km Race: men and women- age 12-14, 15-17, 18-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75 and above.

MSM Mini-Marathon: 0-11 years – age 12-14, 15-17, 18 and above.

Kids Marathon: one class only. Age 0-11 years

NB! Please note that you are put in age category after birth year, not birth date. That means that if you will be 35 in the same year of the event, you will be put in age category 35-39.


Bib pick-up, Information & MSM shop

During race weekend the race secretariat will be located at City Hall in Tromsø city center. Here you will pick up your bib (start number), receive info about the race, and you can visit our official MSM shop. Approximately two weeks before the race you will receive a receipt for your bib by email. NB! Please note that you will have to present ID and your confirmed bib receipt to collect your bib.

Time limits Marathon & Half Marathon

Max time limit for the marathon distance is 5h and 30min. For the Mizuno Halfmarathon the time limit is 3h and 30min.


On raceday

Drop out & medical support during the race

Tromsø Red Cross have medical stations about every 5 kilometres. If you have to drop out of the race, please contact our race marshals and give them your start number. If needed we will provide medical attention and transportation to the finishing area.
Please do NOT start if you are injured or have had a virus or fever in the last four weeks. All runners are responsible for their own medical health and safety, and participate at their own risk.

Service stations & toilets during the race

There are beverage stations approximately every 5 km’s during the race where you get served water, Maxim sportsdrink and bananas. You have a beverage station at the finish. It is not possible to receive help from outside the race or place food/drinks along the course.

Toilets are available close to most of the beverage stations. Toilets are also available in the start- and finish-area.

Bag storage

Bag storage for runners of the marathon, half marathon and 10km distance is available at the Kulturhuset. Please mark your bag with the tag from your bib number before handing it in. Please hand in your bag early to avoid queuing before the start. Bags/clothes are delivered at your own risk. We do not accept larger items of luggage.

Opening hours bag storage: 17:30 – 2:30 o’clock

Please do not leave bags, clothing or other items  in the starting area or elsewhere (besides designated bag storage), since such items are likely to disappear. The organizers can not be held accountable for any such loss.

Course markings

Every kilometre will be marked for the marathon and half marathon courses. The first mark is 42 km, and indicates that there are 42 km left. The next mark is 41 km and counting down to the finish.

Time limits Marathon & Half Marathon

Max time limit for the marathon distance is 5h and 30min. For the Mizuno Halfmarathon the time limit is 3h and 30min.

We have a photographer working for us during the race and these photos will be published on our Facebook-page a few days after the race.  Please note that we do not guarantee that we have a photo of each runner, as the photographer will take photos from both the course and at the finishline.

Medals & prize money

Everyone who finishes the race (all the distances) will receive a medal.
Prizes will be awarded to the 3 best participants in each class of the Marathon, Mizuno Halfmarathon and Coop Mila (10km) race.
Price money will be awarded to the top 3 male and female Marathon runners whose finishing times are under 2.55.00 (women) and 2.30.00 (men).

A bonus of NOK 5 000 will be given for new marathon course record.
The award ceremony for Marathon, Mizuno Half Marathon and the Coop Mila (10km) Race will be held Sunday at 13:00. Unclaimed prizes will not be forwarded.
For MSM Mini-Marathon prizes are drawn. The award ceremony is right after the race at the finish line.
For the Kids Marathon everyone will get a medal. Additionally, a prize for best costumes will be drawn. The awards will be directly after the race at the finish line.

About Tromsø

Where should I stay during my visit in Tromsø?

Visit Tromsø lists most of the  hotels, Apartments, camping sites and other accomodation info HERE. Please note that even though almost all the hotels are located in the city centre, you should always check the location before booking. The hotels in the city centre are all within walking distance from the start- and finish-area of Midnight Sun Marathon, Polar Night Halfmarathon and the reindeer racing and lassothrowing during Samí Week.

How can I travel around Tromsø and the city center?

At  Troms Fylkestrafikk you will find info about tickets and bus routes in Tromsø. You can buy single tickets, tickets for 24hours, 7 days or 30 days within a specific area.

How can I travel to Tromsø?

If you are travelling from outside Norway to Tromsø, you have to fly to Oslo and take a connecting flight to Tromsø. The flight time from Tromsø to Oslo is approximately 2 hours and there are several daily flights.

If you wish to travel by sea, the Coastal steamer Hurtigruten arrives in Tromsø daily, and travelling within the region you can board the express boats from Harstad and Finnsnes. There are also bus Connections from the surrounding cities, such as Narvik, Bardufoss and Alta. Se more info about travelling within Troms region at the regional traffic site, Tromskortet.

What should I do or see when visiting Tromsø?

How far is it from the airport to the city center?

Tromsø is a small island, measuring ca 10km from north to south. The airport (Langnes) is located at the island itself, and with the airport Shuttlebus or taxi, it takes 10-15min to get to the city centre (some more during rush hour) . The airport Shuttlebus also stops outside most of the city hotels. Ask the driver and he will tell you which stop to get off at. All the city hotels are located in the city centre within walking distance from each other. You can book the Aiport Express bus here and use the code MSM2023.
