Midnight Sun Marathon

The date the next Midnight Sun Marathon race will be Saturday, June 18th, 2022.  We look forward to welcome runners to Tromsø to run in the Arctic and the land of the Midnight Sun. Our courses are controlled and certified by AIMS “Association of International Marathon and Distance Races”.  You can choose between: Marathon, Mizuno Half Marathon, Coop Mila (10k), MSM Mimimarathon (4,2k) and Kids Marathon (800m).

Before the race

Where can I pick up my startnumber?

Cannot participate?

No, the registration is personal and binding. By registering for the race you accept our terms & conditions, and we do not refund nor change names on fulfilled registrations. Runners who participate with someone else’s startnumber will be disqualified.

If you cannot participate due to injury/illness you can send us an email ( within a week after race day, together with a medical certificate from your doctor/physician stating that you are unable to attend. Then we will move your registration to next years’ race (NB! We charge a fee of 100,- NOK to move your registration, which also has to be paid within a week after race day).

How much is the entry fee for Midnight Sun Marathon?

The prices for our two biggest events depend on when you sign up, and which distance you are running. Sign up early to save money on the entry fee!

Age limits & groups

Midnight Sun Marathon:  Childrens race: 0-11år//4,2km- no age limit //10km- from 12 y.o//21,1km- from 16 y.o//42,2km- from 18 y.o.

Age and age category is determined by birth year, not birth date. This means that as long as you will be 18 in the year of the race, you can participate in the marathon distance, and so on.


Marathon: men and women- age 18-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75 and above.

Mizuno Half-marathon: men and women- age 16-17, 18-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75 and above.

Coop Mila 10km Race: men and women- age 12-14, 15-17, 18-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75 and above.

MSM Mini-Marathon: 0-11 years – age 12-14, 15-17, 18 and above.

Kids Marathon: one class only. Age 0-11 years

NB! Please note that you are put in age category after birth year, not birth date. That means that if you will be 35 in the same year of the event, you will be put in age category 35-39.


What is the maximum time limit for Midnight Sun Marathon?

Max time limit for the marathon distance is 5h and 30min. For the Mizuno Halfmarathon the time limit is 3h and 30min.


On raceday

What if I have to drop out during the race or need medical aid?

Tromsø Red Cross have medical stations at every 5 kilometres. If you have to drop out of the race, please contact our race marshals and give them your start number. If needed we will provide medical attention and transportation to the finishing area.
Please do NOT start if you are injured or have had a virus or fever in the last four weeks. All runners are responsible for their own medical health and safety, and participate at their own risk.

Where are the drinking stations at Midnight Sun Marathon?

Due to the pandemic we are not allowed to serve beverages in open cups or food during the race. There are the following beverage stations during the race, that serve bottlet water:

Midnight Sun Marathon, stations after 6 km, 12 km, 17 km, 22 km, 27 km, 30 km, 34 km, 37 km and in the finish area

Mizuno Halfmarathon, stations after 5 km, 9 km, 13 km, 16 km and in the finish area

Coop Mila, stations after 5 km and in the finish area

We recommand that everyone that wants other drinks and food during the race, to take own products with them. If you take your own products you have to make sure to take them with you from the start. It is not possible to receive help from outside the race or place food/drinks along the course.

Are there toilets available before and during Midnight Sun Marathon?

Toilets are available close to most of the beverage stations. Toilets are also available in the start- and finish-area.

Toilets during the race:

Midnight Sun Marathon: toilets after ca. 6 km, 17 km, 22 km, 30 km and 37 km.

Mizuno Halfmarathon: toilets after ca. 5-6 km, 9 km, 13 km and 16 km.

Coop Mila: toilets after ca 5-6 km and in the finish area.

Is there any distance marking along the course?

Every kilometre will be marked for the marathon and half marathon courses. The first mark is 42 km, and indicates that there are 42 km left. The next mark is 41 km and counting down to the finish.

Where can I find pictures from Midnight Sun Marathon?

MarathonPhotos  is our official partner, and they take pictures of all finishing runners at the race. You can order pictures, video or diploma from the race directly from them.  Save a smile for the photographers at the finish line! We also receive other pictures from the race, and these photos will be published on our Facebook-page a few days after the race.




About Tromsø

Where should I stay during my visit in Tromsø?

Visit Tromsø lists most of the  hotels, Apartments, camping sites and other accomodation info HERE. Please note that even though almost all the hotels are located in the city centre, you should always check the location before booking. The hotels in the city centre are all within walking distance from the start- and finish-area of Midnight Sun Marathon, Polar Night Halfmarathon and the reindeer racing and lassothrowing during Samí Week.

How can I travel to Tromsø?

If you are travelling from outside Norway to Tromsø, you have to fly to Oslo and take a connecting flight to Tromsø. The flight time from Tromsø to Oslo is approximately 2 hours and there are several daily flights.

If you wish to travel by sea, the Coastal steamer Hurtigruten arrives in Tromsø daily, and travelling within the region you can board the express boats from Harstad and Finnsnes. There are also bus Connections from the surrounding cities, such as Narvik, Bardufoss and Alta. Se more info about travelling within Troms region at the regional traffic site, Tromskortet.
